The way the land stretched off in broken hillocks through the Hoennian sea made for a perfect channel of cold, wet sea air to meet sun-warmed island breezes. It was one of the reasons why the weather in this part of the region was so chaotic.

Dark clouds of a brewing storm fumed on the horizon. Memo directed Nike towards a small break of land. Pain made his thighs shake as he slid off his dragon; he’d been airborne for the better part of the last twenty-four hours, and any solid ground-- even this slip of a thing-- was a comfort.

“Hi, Paxton,” he said quietly as he rolled his shoulders and tried not to waddle like a newborn lamb. “Doing ok?”

He's resting, admittedly. Running from the shore into the wilderness and back to help support evacuating League officers was rough. He needed a breather. He quietly lets people know of his position, keeping watch above the supply route a few squads of officers nd rangers were moving through. As he rests on a rock, helmet tucked securely between his ankles, Memo lands. [break][break]

He eyes him, tossing back some water before idly offering the canteen to him in silence. He's building up the energy to speak. [break][break]

"Lookin' good, Memo." he said after wiping his mouth. He offers the shaking ranger a teasing smile before his eyes move back to the temporary supply route. [break][break]

"For now, just thirsty." he nods over at the route bellow them. "They just started setting this one up, but there's another group farther north."

He manages to pitch himself against the first backrest he can find, biting back a sigh of relief when his legs aren’t responsible for doing all of the holding up.

“Right. Good.” He finds himself smiling, laughing even. When had ‘looking good’ become so stripped down so as to mean drawing breath and barely able of keeping themselves upright?

“The southern supply routes around the outlying islands and back to the mainland are flowing well. Whatever Rocket is here to get, they seem pretty hyperfocused.”

His interactions with Paxton have been limited, and not always positive. They’d fought rather heartily at one of the last Ranger conclaves about dahlia goode’s then-plan to open up an interspacial rift in Fortree’s belly. But Memo didn’t hold grudges, and they were all on the same side, anyway. Once the immediate threat had come and was, for the most part, mitigated, there was no reason to bear ill will against Paxton.

"This doesn't seem lie ka ploy for more territory like the Sootopolis operation." he said, mulling over Memo's intel along with his own observations. It bothered him. What were they so desperate to find? Was it another seal? Something related with what they'd seen during the AQUA meeting? [break][break]

But so far aside from the TERA crystals not much of the sort was here. illeana reyes and Eva Morales would've told them by now if there were. His thoughts are interrupted by Memo's own musings and he lets out a snort. [break][break]

"Brine is an...acquired taste." he explained. His old apartment in Lillycove had given him enough of briny air for a lifetime. He'd grown used to it. And every form it came in. From a refreshing cool sea salt air, to the pungent sweet rot of trash in salt water. [break][break]

"Guess nothing beats mountain air after all." he added, finding himself agreeing. After all, the beach could only offer so much. He preferred more seclusion deeper in the mountains.

Memo hadn’t been in Hoenn when Rocket invaded Sootopolis but he had to agree with Paxton. “No, if they’re trying to landgrab, they’re going about it wrong.”

He scrubbed a hand through his hair and bit back a sigh. “From what I can tell, they’re just going after… scraps. Leftovers. But for a horde of brainless, bloodthirsty followers… I can’t imagine they’re that stupid.” Scrambling a full-scale assault for some dusty old baubles both did and didn’t seem like Rocket’s MO.

He smiled at Paxton’s agreement, nodding. “I like dry air. Warm heat. The sun.” His eyes flicked skyward, looking for the missing solar body where it was encapsulated in thick clouds.

"Feels like Postdorm...something we haven't detected yet." he said, referring to the SEAL STONES they'd tried to acquired and failed to. It had to be the same here, especially with the concentration of Rocket everywhere. [break][break]

"Mmm...kind of ominous yeah?" he said nodding his head in agreement. Bellow their officers circle up, setting up perimeter and beginning to build temporary cover with their pokemon. Down further bellow he can see rangers carrying thick backpacks, probably hand carrying supplies for now. [break][break]

"We'll be out of here soon enough. We were close to figuring out what the hell Rocket was up to before they sent me off to reinforce positions." he said with a tired smile and a nod. "Keeping casualties to a minimum and being a pain in the ass for Rocket seems easy enough."

Memo tried to remember where he’d been during Postdorm and couldn’t recall the specifics, the memories getting tangled up in the shredding thornbush of all the other apocalyptic battles he’d been in Hoenn for. “Feels like the region's been on fire since I got here,” he said, more as an aside than anything really serious. “Has it always been like this?”

Paxton shrugged. "Dunno if before I came it was like this...but I think Rocket taking over Kanto really destabilized things around here. But that's just...people. Not-" he gestured at the sky unable to really describe the forces beyond his comprehension.

"Shit's topsy turvier than ever, and it's been getting worse so...not exactly the same but not a good time."

As if on cue there's a couple of explosions with rocks dropping fro mthe hills next to the route opposite him and Memo. Rockets trying to put a hault to the movement of crates and personnel. "Shit." He murmured, putting away his canteen as he reaches for a pokemon to send out.

A Seviper is unleashed, sliding and leaping into action already glowing and hissing with the power of the TERASTILIZATION available. On the comms, people are alreayd reporting in and Paxton is quick to respond. "I've got visuals on 3 to my 9 o' clock, engaging." he looked to Memo. "Can't catch a break out here."

Memo frowned and looked out at the cloud choked sky. Having been in Hoenn for a little under two years, it was easy to get subsumed in the region’s chaos, and forget that there was an outside world.

Rocket-occupied Kanto. Galar, half destroyed.

Hoenn, the beginning of the end of everything.

A burst of static and scramble to action heralds the beginning of more pandemonium. Memo’s aching feet are moving before his brain has time to catch up, and he’s on Nike’s back and in the air, shooting over where the bogeys were last seen, flying low and swinging a dragon tail down amongst them.

He can see the purple crystal crown growing out of his partner's head as she hissed and dashed towards the enemy, plunging her large red fangs into a Rocket before tossing them into the ditch. [break][break]

As she works, Paxton is already pulling out another pokemon, sending in Joules as cover. "We're good here, back them up." he ordered as the Magnezone flew down amidst the chaos, immediately becoming the biggest target and being pummeled on by a Machamp. [break][break]

The DRAGON TAIL lands, sending up dirt and dust and screams as the small assault scrambles around the Flygon. "Pull out of there, we don't know how many are coming." he said, relaying another order to the people still trying to carry supplies on the ground. "Leave it, just run!" he said as a HYPER BEAM blast into the sky, smashing Joules backwards and pushing her away from close range.

Memo doesn’t want to run away from this fight, but Paxton has the right of it. They’re outnumbered and-- as a hyper beam shoots through the air, catching Nike’s wing and knocking dragon and rider sideways-- outgunned.

Memo hits the ground (good thing they were flying rather low) and rolls violently, coming to a stop in a cloud of dust, wheezing, and wondering just how many times he was going to eat dirt during these excursions.

“Heard,” he radios weakly back to Paxton, ribs aching as he forces himself to sit up. Nike, having recovered, skims low to the ground and scoops him up, her wings blowing back a sand attack to try and give Paxton and the other retreating operatives more cover.

"Joules! Cover their retreat!" he ordered as the Magnezone put themselves at the backs of the members retreating as a sqaud of Rocket armed to the teeth come out of the side of the path. Their route is compromised. [break][break]

"Guillermo Marceliño ! I'm sending you backup!" he said as his other partner rushed through. A Bronzong makes itself known, as it drops into the battlefield, using an EXTRASENSORY to split apart a Hitmonchan before getting thrown into the supply route nsad being chase. But at least, the group is split, and Paxton has taken some heat off his comrade. [break][break]

The Bronzong fights hard, TERASTALIZING into a PSYCHIC TYPE as it blasts both Rocket and pokemon with CONFUSION sending out a cacophony of screams before the dual type is dog piled on. The carnage seems to produce a pink mist, and Paxton's hackles raise. They're on a time limit now. [break][break]

Joules can only blast PROTECT, shielding the officer still limping away. But they still draw Rocket's ire and others begin blasting and punching at the PROTECT chipping and cracking the psychic barrier. [break][break]

Paxton reloads on his end, dropping to the ground and looking for someone's head to aim at. "I've got you-" he said squeezing the trigger just as someone is about to throw another pokeball, aiming for the ranger's head.

Safely ensconced in his Flygon’s arms, Memo presses his head against her rough, sandy skin, closing his eyes and breathing deep against the serious of explosions and cries that go off in rapid succession.

He allows himself one moment of hiding from the world and then snaps back into action. Nike hups him over her shoulder and he swings onto her back. Her lithe body lashes and shoots a boomburst down over the charging Rockets as she continues to zip away.
